Who are construction workers?

Preschoolers are eager to learn about different occupations such as construction workers. This will help preschoolers learn about their environment and about different people and their occupations.

Construction workers consist of various types of workers such as carpenters, builders, plumbers, and others.

In this guide, you will learn how to teach preschoolers about carpenters, builders, and plumbers.

You will learn about the various activities such as art activities, dramatic play, puzzles, worksheets, and others that you can do with the preschoolers, so they can understand the concept of construction workers.

Step 1
Teaching preschoolers about carpenters

Preschoolers want to learn about people and their occupations. You can explain to them about carpenters and the kind of work they do. For example, carpenters build houses, buildings, remodel places, or have smaller jobs such as replacing window frames or repairing screen porches.

Carpenters use tools like the picture illustrates as well as other tools they need for their work.

You can also read books to the preschoolers about carpenters and show them the different tools. While you read the book, you can talk to them about the different pictures.

For dramatic play, you can provide different kinds of preschool tools, hats, and other items that carpenters use and allow them to act out the role of carpenters.

For art time, you can provide pictures of carpenters and their tools and let the children color the pictures.

Step 2
Teaching preschoolers about builders

You can explain to the preschoolers that builders build houses or buildings.

To help preschoolers learn about builders, you can read books to them that are about builders such as Bob the builder books. You can show them pictures and talk to them about the pictures.

For dramatic play, you can provide plastic building tools, hats, or other items that builders use on their jobs. You can allow the preschoolers to play builders building something with Legos. The picture on the left shows a Lego house in progress.

For art time, you can provide crayons and white paper and let the preschoolers draw a builder building something.

You can also provide magazine pictures of builders that you have cut out and have the preschoolers glue the pictures to white construction paper.

Videos are also good teaching material. You can provide one that mentions builders and talk about what is happening while the preschoolers are watching it.

Step 3
Teaching preschoolers about plumbers

Plumbers are another type of construction worker. They install the plumbing in the buildings or houses that carpenters build.

You can start teaching preschoolers by reading them books about plumbers and showing them pictures. You can tell them what plumbers do and the tools they need.

For dramatic play, you can provide plastic plumbing tools, hats, or other equipment that plumbers use. You can allow them to pretend to be plumbers and fix things.

For art, you can have pictures of plumbers that preschoolers can color.

These activities will help preschoolers learn more about plumbers.

Other activities

The following are other activities that you can provide for your preschoolers to learn about construction workers.

Matching game

You can prepare a worksheet where the preschoolers could match the first column to the second column.

In the first column, you can have pictures of carpenters, builders, and plumbers. In the second column, you can have pictures of buildings, Legos, faucets, or other types of pictures that relate to the first column. The preschoolers can draw a line from the first column to the second column matching the worker to their occupation.

Another activity that you can do is to provide some songs that you can teach preschoolers about carpenters, builders, or plumbers.

Building blocks

You can provide different types of building blocks such as Legos and have them construct buildings or whatever comes to their minds. They can pretend to be carpenters or builders.

Preschool tool kit

You can provide tool kits for preschoolers so they can pretend to be carpenters.

Preschool books

You can provide preschool books on carpenters, builders, plumbers, or other construction workers and allow them to pretend to read to each other.
